What is Alginates?

Alginates or known as Sodium Alginate is a cell wall component of marine brown seaweed. Alginates is a salt form of alginic acid. The conversion of alginic acid to alginates allows its solubility in water. With the presents of calsium ions, Alginates could change from liquid solution into gel structure. This is the advantage used in many industry application.

 

Functionality & Application?

Alginate is used as hydrocolloid in various application such as food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, textile, cosmetic, and dentistry. The main function of Alginate is as Thickener, Gelling agent, film-forming agent, stabilizer (Ice cream), and also bonding agent. in Beer productions, alginates can play a stabilizing role in beer foam and to increase the transparancy. Alginates also used to make meat analogue or imitation food (meat, jam, cheese). 

 

for non-food application, Alginates used as peeling mask, thickening and stabilizing agent in cosmetic, dentistry (making mold), medicine (sustained-release agent), etc.
